GLOG Class: Crystolier
Crystoliers were originally all members of the royal guard of the Duchy of Lodoth, but over time the term came to refer to any of the most proficient orders of fusiliers of the Colonnade. They are known for their unparalleled aim and deadly inter-scholastic rivalries.
Starting Equipment: A fancy but practical hat, a crystal fusil (light or heavy), infantry leathers (light armor), and an infantry saber (medium weapon).
Background
- Duchal Academy Graduate. You were trained in the original Crystolier academy in Lodoth. Gain a Duchal Academy Medallion, the Etiquette skill, and an indestructible air of scornful nobility.
- Zamax Praetorian. You are a firstborn son or daughter of Zamax, trained from childhood to choose the fates of others. Gain a Firstborn Medallion, the History skill, and the right to vote in Zamax.
- War College Doctorate. You are a graduate student of war in one of the Colonnade’s many accredited War Colleges. Gain a War College Medallion, the Soldiery skill, a thesis on small unit tactics, and a very up-to-date resume.
- Rookery-War Veteran. You have served five years in the marksmen’s corps of the embattled Rookeries. Gain a Veteran’s Medallion, the Threat Assessment skill, and an interesting scar.
- Sport Shooter. You won a gold medal in the Grand Fusil Tourney. Gain the Champion’s Medallion and a trick shot no mortal can do better than you.
- Born Talent. You have no formal recognition, but you make your own way. Gain the Trophy Medallion, the Hunting skill, and a chip on your shoulder.
Crystoliers get +1 crit range per template of Crystolier.
A: Marksman, Three-Front War
B: Collector, Sniper
C: Regimental Honor, +2 attack stat
D: Deadeye, Master
Marksman
If you miss with your first attack each round, attack again. The first attack never happened (consuming no ammunition if relevant).
Three-Front War
You are trained to fight in the Capitoline homelands, the Donjon depths, and out upon the Mist Sea. You can scurry, swim, and climb like a rat, and you never lose your hat.
Collector
The worth of a Crystolier and the salary he commands is determined by the number of medallions he has collected from other defeated Crystoliers. Each genuine medallion he collects can be used to improve the effective natural roll of a hit or initiative check by 1 once per day (think of your medallions as a pool of points that refreshes daily). This increase can cause a hit to crit but not a miss to hit, and he can spend as many points on a single roll as he pleases. He may not spend these points on attack rolls against fellow Crystoliers.
Gain the Counterfeit Medallion Identification skill. Trophy Medallions are homemade, but they are not counterfeit.
Sniper
Double your close range distance with fusils. If you have something the brace your fusil against (two-handing is sufficient for a light fusil), you ignore attack penalties from weather or movement that don’t completely obscure your view of the target.
Regimental Honor
You have +2 to reaction rolls with professional soldiers, increasing to +4 with other Crystoliers. If you are the superior collector, you may not challenge them to a duel.
Deadeye
If you roll a natural critical hit, you may spend medallion points to increase it to up to a natural 21, at which point you deal triple damage instead of double damage. You may spend 2 medallion points to make incredibly accurate shots - automatically hitting targets as small as a fly. Because you do not roll attacks when attacking this way, these attacks never crit.
Master
You may spend a week to transform your most impressive feat so far into a Master Medallion. You will be treated as nobility by all when you display it, and other Crystoliers must ask your permission to challenge you to a duel. It is poor form to turn down another master.
Notes
Official rules for Crystal Fusils are yet to come, but I'm planning something like:
- Light Crystal Fusils take up 1 inventory slot, deal 1d6 damage, and have a 30' range.
- Heavy Crystal Fusils take up 2 inventory slots, deal 1d10 damage, and have a 60' range.
Crystals have a charge amount. Whether I make that abstract or concrete, and whether it regenerates naturally or it must be recharged by something (MD?) is yet to be determined.
Crystals also have a type. Ember does fire damage, Voidshard does force damage, etc.. Higher quality and larger crystals have additional effects, and superior lenses (such as those found on masterwork weapons) can draw out improved results from inferior crystals.
